If you want engagement photos that feel like an actual adventure and not just “stand here, smile,” Garden of the Gods is one of the easiest wins in Colorado. The place just shows up,those bold red rock formations, Pikes Peak casually photobombing in the background, and that early morning calm before the park gets busy.
It’s a go-to spot for couples who want photos that feel natural, outdoorsy, and a little wild without needing to summit anything before 7 a.m. You get big views, room to breathe, and a chance to just be yourselves while we wander around and find the good light.
And this session? It was extra special. Lizzy and I grew up together, so photographing her engagement felt like one of those sweet, full-circle moments life gives you every once in a while. She and her fiancé, Ben, originally planned to shoot at The Broadmoor. But since photos there require being an overnight guest, we pivoted to Garden of the Gods… and honestly, it could not have worked out better!
November showed off in the best way. We had one of those calm, easy mornings where the park feels almost empty, the red rocks were warming up with the sunrise, and the mountains still had a dusting of snow hanging on. The kind of light that makes you pause for a second.
We wandered around, shook off the nerves (everyone has them, but I’m here to help!), and played with two outfits so their gallery had a mix of vibes. And instead of calling it a day after the session, they kept the celebration going by touring wedding venues, which honestly, 10/10 recommend. Engagement season should be enjoyed, not rushed through.
So if you’re planning your own adventure here, this guide has everything you actually need: the best spots, timing tips, outfit ideas, permit info, crowd hacks, things to do nearby, all the real, helpful stuff that makes your Garden of the Gods engagement session feel relaxed, intentional, and very you.

Why Garden of the Gods Is Such a Dream for Engagement Sessions
Garden of the Gods is one of those rare places where adventure doesn’t have to mean a long hike or complicated planning. You get these dramatic, larger-than-life rock formations and wide-open views, yet it’s surprisingly easy to move around and explore. As the sun shifts, the whole place changes with it. Light hits one direction and suddenly you’ve got a soft, romantic scene. But take a few steps and boom, a bold and powerful backdrop. Some spots feel iconic and grand, while others feel like your own private corner of Colorado. It’s the kind of place that lets you breathe, wander, and soak in the moment, all without the stress!

Best Photo Spots in Garden of the Gods
Garden of the Gods is one of those places where you can walk five steps and feel like you’re in a totally different scene. Which is why I love bouncing around to a few spots during a session. Here are some of my go-tos (and why they’re SO good):
High Point Overlook
This spot is iconic for a reason. The second you step out of the car, you’re hit with those layered red rocks and Pikes Peak casually hanging out in the background. Sunrise here is the move, soft glow, quiet trails, and that jaw-drop moment where you both just look at each other like, okay… this is unreal. It’s such an easy place to start the adventure with big, wide-open Colorado energy.

South Garden
If you’re craving a little drama (the fun, photogenic kind), this area totally delivers. The rock formations are tall and sculptural, like nature just casually built a movie set for us. We can play with all kinds of looks here: bold and moody in one direction, softer and airy just a few steps away. It’s such an easy place to mix up the vibe without trekking far. Also the access is super simple, which always makes things feel relaxed and enjoyable.
Central Garden Trails
This area is the heartbeat of the park. Towering rock walls, easy strolls, and little pockets of beautiful light just waiting to be found. It’s the kind of spot that gives you options: a few wide shots to show off those epic views, then we tuck into a quiet corner where it suddenly feels like it’s just the two of you in the whole world. It’s relaxed, easy to explore, and always delivers those “yep, this feels like us” moments.

Ridge Trail
If you want something a little quieter and less “we might accidentally photobomb someone’s family hike,” this trail is gold. It has wild textures, cool angles, and usually way fewer people, especially in the morning. It feels a little more adventurous without actually being difficult. Best for couples who want to feel more “alone” in the park.
Perkins Central Garden Trail
This one’s paved and super accessible, perfect if you want easy walking without giving up views. You still get those massive rock walls and glowing morning light, but without trekking up steep trails. It’s one of those spots where you can get a gallery full of variety in just a few minutes of walking. Paved and super accessible without losing the views.

Bonus Adventure Spots for Photos
- Siamese Twins Trail: Short, easy, and leads to a natural window formation that frames Pikes Peak beautifully.
- Palmer Trail Loop: More mileage and great for couples who want movement and candid moments.
- Chambers/Bretag/Palmer Loop: One of my personal favorites for photo sessions since it’s quiet, scenic, and full of variety.
No matter where we wander in Garden of the Gods, we’ll bounce through a few different areas so your gallery feels full and dynamic. Like a mini story of your morning together! I’ve shot here more times than I can count, and every single time I hear that first “wow…” from a couple, it still gets me!
There’s just something about being surrounded by these giant red rock formations that reminds you to slow down and take it in. I’m not only here to take your engagement photos, I’m here to help you soak up the fresh Colorado air. Laugh a little, explore somewhere new together, and walk away with images that actually feel like you.

Best Times of Day for Garden of the Gods Engagement Photos
If you’ve hung around here for more than two minutes, you already know what I’m about to say… sunrise at Garden of the Gods is elite. Absolutely game-changing! The park is quiet, the air is crisp, and the red rocks literally light up as the sun comes in sideways. It’s the kind of glow you just can’t fake, and it makes everything feel calm and intimate. Which is exactly why I loved shooting Lizzy and Ben’s session at that hour.
Golden hour in the evening is gorgeous too, don’t get me wrong, but it definitely brings more people. Summer and weekends turn the park into everyone’s favorite hangout spot. If you’re dreaming of that peaceful, glowy vibe without a dozen hikers in the background, sunrise is your best friend.
And if you’re planning Garden of the Gods engagement photos and aren’t sure which time fits your vision, don’t worry, I’ve got you! I’ll help you pick the timing based on the season, crowds, lighting, and the overall feel you want. We’ll make sure the light, the views, and the mood all line up so your session feels just right for you!

Garden of the Gods Engagement Tips
Do you need a permit for engagement photos at Garden of the Gods?
The good news? You don’t need a permit for most Garden of the Gods engagement photos, which means more energy focused on exploring and less on paperwork. The only time permits come into play is if things start to look a little Hollywood. Big props, large setups, or a whole production crew in tow.
And one quick heads-up: drones are a no-go here since it’s a protected no-fly zone. So we’ll keep our adventure grounded (literally) while still creating something stunning together.
How to avoid crowds
Crowds are the only real downside at Garden of the Gods, but don’t worry, we’ll outsmart them. Sunrise here is the clear winner (I promise the early wake-up pays off with the most peaceful, glowy vibes). Weekdays are always better than weekends. If you want an especially calm experience, late fall and those sneaky-quiet March weekdays are kind of amazing. I also like to start in the less popular areas first and then make our way to the iconic spots once the morning hikers have thinned out.
And here’s a little insider tip: the parking areas near Ridge Trail tend to stay quieter early on, which makes it the perfect jumping-off point for a relaxed and spacious session.

What to wear for engagement photos in Colorado
When it comes to choosing outfits for Garden of the Gods engagement photos, you honestly can’t go wrong with neutrals or earthy tones. They look incredible against those red rocks and keep the focus on you two. I love a good mix of textures too: linen, denim, cozy knit sweaters. Anything that adds dimension without trying too hard! Comfortable boots or shoes you can move in are a must, since we’ll be wandering and exploring a bit. And if you’re into flowy dresses or skirts, this is the place, the wind here loves to show off in the best way. Layers are always a smart move as well, because Colorado likes to change the script whenever she feels like it, and we’ll be prepared for whatever mood she’s in that day!

Safety + Seasons: What to Expect in the Wild World of Colorado Weather
Colorado weather loves to keep us on our toes, and Garden of the Gods is no exception. Spring brings a little breeze and those first pops of green, but we might hit a few muddy patches along the trails. Summer brings bright skies and warm temps, though midday can feel pretty intense. So early morning sessions are definitely our best friend. Fall is the fan favorite for a reason: crisp air, glowing leaves, and the kind of cozy sweater weather that makes you want to snuggle up a little closer. And winter has those snow-dusted red rocks that are magical. Just make sure we pack layers and watch our footing because ice likes to sneak up on us. Whatever season you choose, we’re embracing nature’s surprises together. If Colorado throws a little weather plot twist our way, we’ll roll with it and make memories anyway!

Make a Day Out of It: Things to Do in Colorado Springs
If you’re driving in from out of town, you might as well turn the whole day into a mini trip. Here are a few ideas:
Grab Coffee
- Loyal Coffee: Trendy, local, and SO good.
- Switchback Coffee Roasters: Cozy, warm, and perfect for a post-session pick-me-up.
Places to Eat
- Odyssey Gastropub: This place sits in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs. This pub has a from scratch-menu that is to die for!
- The Rabbit Hole: This place has upscale American cuisine and cocktails. The atmosphere is so unique and fun, and they play amazing music.
- Urban Egg: Great for brunch if your session ends mid-morning. Super casual but so delicious.
Fun Things To Do Around Town
- Visit The Broadmoor (even if you can’t shoot there, it’s fun to walk around).
- Wander Manitou Springs for small shops + local vibes.
- Ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway for insane views.
- Explore the trails at Red Rock Canyon Open Space: another beautiful photo location!
Colorado Springs is the kind of city where you can mix outdoors adventure with cute cafes and good food all in one day. You can start your morning surrounded by wild red rock formations at Garden of the Gods, grab a latte at a cute local café 20 minutes later, and end the day with mountain views or a dreamy rooftop dinner. It’s outdoorsy without being remote, lively without feeling overwhelming, and has this unique mix of small-town charm and big-mountain energy.

Lizzy + Ben’s Engagement Session
Lizzy and I have known each other since we were kids. So getting to photograph this chapter of her life already meant a lot. As mentioned above, she and Ben had wanted their engagement photos at The Broadmoor. But when plans changed, they told me, “Let’s just go to Garden of the Gods instead.”
And wow, it could not have worked out better!
We met in the early morning when the sky was just starting to lighten, and everything felt calm and peaceful. They both mentioned feeling nervous, but within minutes, they found their rhythm as we explored the park. We explored all the different parts of the park together, and when the sun finally hit the rocks just right, we wandered to quieter spots for more intimate shots.
They switched into a second outfit halfway through, a little more relaxed. And it added such a nice contrast to their gallery. And when we wrapped up? They didn’t just hop back in the car. They made a whole day out of it, heading straight to tour wedding venues and continuing the celebration! It felt like the kind of day you want to bottle up and keep forever.

Lizzy’s Review: “I’ve known Rachel since we were kids, and it’s been so special to see how her natural creativity has turned into such an incredible talent behind the camera. She has such an eye for capturing genuine moments! It wasn’t awkward at all and working with her was so easy and fun! She’s so talented, kind, and dedicated to creating photos you’ll cherish forever. I can’t recommend Rachel enough to anyone looking for photos that actually feel like you! Her work is timeless, beautiful, and filled with heart.”
